History

The International Society of Surgery (ISS) / Société Internationale de Chirurgie (SIC) was founded in Brussels 1902. It is the oldest international surgical society and is dedicated to the exchange of knowledge, innovation, and experience. Its aims are to promote:

High standards of practice in the art of surgery

  • Support the advancement of science within and among specialties through clinical investigation and laboratory research
  • Support the basic and specialty fields of general surgery
  • Establish collegiality
  • Facilitate the exchange of ideas on a formal and informal basis.

The six Integrated Societies of the ISS/SIC include the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES); International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care (IATSIC); International Association for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition (IASMEN); Breast Surgery International (BSI); International Society for Digestive Surgery (ISDS); and Alliance for Surgery and Anesthesia Presence (ASAP).

During the 35th World Congress of Surgery in Hong Kong, organized as the International Surgical Week 1993, the International Association for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition was founded as an Integrated Society of the ISS/SIC. At the time this represented another important field of surgical pathophysiology. IASMEN has continued to contribute greatly to developing new knowledge in the field of clinical nutrition and metabolism. It attracts surgeons from all over the world.
